If you've been using Google's hidden App Ops to lock down and prevent some of your Android applications from exposing your privacy, then think twice before updating to the new Android 4.4.2 software.

What Is App Ops?App Ops was Google's hidden gem that was built into the Android OS since 4.3 Jelly Bean, and it allowed you to control which apps had access to track your current location, read and modify contact information, and more. Image via wonderhowto.com It was meant more as an internal tool for Google, not for individual use, but was easily unlocked using tools like Permission Manager and App Ops Starter on Google Play. Though it had the potential to break app functionality in certain cases, it allowed you to prevent apps from collecting and sharing data that had no good reason to do so, like in the case of Brightest Flashlight Free, which the FTC caught maliciously accessing and sharing users' location data to advertisers.It was also reported earlier this year that over 260,00 mobile apps with malicious intentions were floating around, and that most of them were Android. This report also claimed that 3 in every 5 third-party Android app stores serve up malware, which makes you appreciate the hidden App Ops even more.
KitKat 4.4.2 Kills App OpsHowever, in the recent Android 4.4.2 KitKat update, Google has officially wiped App Ops out of the system, meaning apps like App Ops Starter will no longer work until they find a workaround for gaining access.

In fact, they had just lauded App Ops as a great step forward in privacy and security in Android, and are looking to Google to bring it back with the following improvements.Android users should be able to disable all collection of trackable identifiers by an app with a single switch, including data like phone numbers, IMEIs, information about the user's accounts. There should be a way to disable an app's network access entirely. It is clear that a large fraction of apps (including flashlights, wallpapers, UI skins, many games) simply don't need network access and, as we saw last week, are prone to abuse it. The App Ops interface needs to be smoothed out an properly integrated into the main OS user interface, including the Settings->Apps menus and the Play Store. There are numerous ways to make App Ops work for developers. Pick one, and deploy it.

Choose from up to four Top shortcuts and Bottom shortcuts, like Home, Toggle Wi-Fi, or App drawer. After you make a change to the apps or shortcuts, you want to make sure to hit the check mark at the top right to save.

It's perfect for nighttime browsing, but also for general use, especially on OLED displays with inky blacks. Dark mode, aka night mode, is particularly great for tweeting, and Twitter makes it easy to switch.If you're an avid Twitter user, you might know that Twitter has had a dark mode option since 2016. However, up until March 2019, Twitter only had one dark mode option. The company rolled out an OLED night mode dubbed "Lights out" on March 28. Step 1: Enable Dark Mode (Previously Night Mode)Enabling "Dark mode" (previously called "Night mode") on the Twitter app is actually super simple. First, make sure you're on the main page of any of the four tabs at the bottom of the display. Just tap on one of them if you're not.Next, tap your profile icon in the top left or swipe right from the left side of the screen. Now, tap the light bulb (iOS) or crescent moon (Android, some iOS versions) in the bottom left of the menu. On iOS, you can simply tap "Automatic dark mode," and Twitter will react accordingly. On Android, tap "Night mode," then tap "Automatic at sunset." iOS (left) vs. Android (right). If you have an iPhone X, XS, or XS Max, you might notice that your dark mode doesn't match the color shown above. That's because, by default, Twitter uses its OLED "Lights out" mode for OLED devices. It can be hard to get all of your friends, family, coworkers, and acquaintances to jump on board with the more-secure email system ProtonMail, but that doesn't mean you can't still send them encrypted emails. Best of all, they won't even have to install any other apps or extensions to read or reply to the messages.By default, emails sent from one ProtonMail user to another use asymmetric cryptography to provide end-to-end encryption. The sender uses the recipient's public key to encrypt the message, then the recipient decrypts the message with his/her private key. All of this is done automatically with no work from the users.When sending emails to somebody that's not using ProtonMail, messages are encrypted with TLS, but only if the other email service supports it. Most do support it, so that's a good thing, but this also means that those services will be able to read the messages. Not good, and that's why ProtonMail offers a way to offer end-to-end encrypted messages for outside email addresses using symmetric cryptography.Don't Miss: How to Change Your Display Name That Shows Up in EmailsIn ProtonMail's symmetric-key encryption, the sender would turn the message into ciphertext using a custom key (password) which is either shared or already known by the recipient. Sending Secure Emails to Non-ProtonMail UsersTo start, open a new draft in your ProtonMail app for Android or iPhone, then fill it out like normal. When your message is composed, simply tap the "Encrypt for Outside" button (the lock icon) underneath the subject line, then set a password and confirm it.It's likely that your recipient will have no idea what the password will be unless you call or message it to them in another manner, which may be too much work. So you're better off adding a "hint" here so they can figure out the password without any more work on your part. Make the hint a question only they would know the answer to and have that answer be the password. Once you're satisfied with your password and hint, tap the "Apply" button. You should now see a green check mark next to the lock icon, which lets you know it's safe to send now. Now all that's left is to hit the send icon (the paper plane). As soon as you hit send, the countdown begins for its 28-day lifespan.

LineageOS, the successor to the wildly popular CyanogenMod custom ROM, is adding an interesting new feature that could potentially save lots of juice when your battery is running low. When enabling "Extreme power saver" mode, which can be set to kick in automatically at 15%, you'll soon have the option of changing your kernel's performance profile as well.These new features can be found in the battery settings menu, and they have multiple use cases. The team at LineageOS is adding this functionality on top of the Power Saver profile that's been around in stock Android since 5.0 Lollipop, and the upcoming additions will give you easy access to three new performance profiles. The feature hasn't gone live for everyone just yet, but it should soon make its way to LineageOS users in an upcoming build.Don't Miss: 6 Easy Ways to Increase Battery Life on Your Android Device

New Performance ProfilesThe upcoming advanced settings will be added to the Battery section in the Settings app, so to try it out, head to this menu, then tap "Battery saver and performance." There's one new battery-saving profile in addition to the existing Power Save mode. The new setting will be called "Efficiency," and offers a slight improvement in performance above Power Save mode while keeping the battery savings as high as possible. To adjust any of these options, simply use the "Performance profile" slider. The normal start-up profile is there as well, called "Balanced," and offers an even balance between battery saving and performance. On the other hand, there's also two new performance-oriented profiles. The first one is "Quick," and the second one is "Performance." Quick increases performance while still maintaining a fair amount of battery optimization, whereas Performance mode pushes your phone the furthest it can go and simply does not care about battery usage.
Possible Usage & ThoughtsThere will soon be a battery mode for every use case imaginable added to LineageOS, and it sounds pretty good from what we can see so far. Performance mode for gaming, Efficiency for road trips and constant GPS usage, Quick for extreme multitasking, Power Save for that final stretch, and Balanced for general usage or those who are pleased with their current battery life.What do you guys think, how will you use these features? But just today, Reddit user brianmoyano received a firmware update that appears to be a near-final version of Android 7.0, so the official release could be even sooner than we've thought. Android Nougat is on the horizon.

The EvidenceUsers have been able to install a preview version of Android Nougat for months now, but the firmware was clearly marked as "beta." However, when Redditor brianmoyano went to withdraw from the beta program after installing 7.0 on his Nexus 6P, something strange happened.Instead of receiving a firmware downgrade to Android Marshmallow like he should have, the update server sent him an even newer version of Android Nougat. This version was marked as an internal, Googlers-only edition of Android 7.0, with a build number of NRD90Mâ€”clearly newer than the latest public beta, which is NPD90G. Images via Reddit Google uses internal testing versions like this when they're almost ready to release a new product, a process referred to as "dogfooding." Pair that with the firmware's reported security patch date of August 5, 2016, and this is obviously a version that we weren't supposed to see.But this internal build is not marked as "beta," unlike the latest public version of the preview. Normally, you'd see a "Beta help" Quick Settings tile, but it's conspicuously absent here, suggesting that this is not a beta release. All signs point to this being a behind-the-scenes release of the final Android Nougat build intended for Googlers only, but there's even more evidence to support this. The ImplicationThe first question to ask here is "Why so early?" The only logical deduction is that Google is trying to get the jump on Apple. The Q3 timeframe means that Android Nougat will almost certainly be unveiled before the iPhone 7 and iOS 10 in early-September, so perhaps Google is hoping to get a couple of news cycles to itself before Apple starts hogging the spotlight.Another aspect to consider is the fact that Google has always debuted a new Nexus device on the same day the new Android version is released each year.
