How To: StepLock Makes You Exercise to Use Your Favorite Android Apps
Most newer Android devices manufactured in 2014 or later have a built-in pedometer for tracking your fitness activity. This step counter is a great way to keep yourself in shape and motivated, but developer Leonardo Cavaletti has come up with an even better way to put it to use.His app leverages the pedometer against your smartphone addiction, effectively forcing you to get up off the couch before you can access your favorite apps and time wasters. You simply set a step goal for the most addictive apps on your phone, then this app will lock you out of them until you've reached that goal. It's a great way to finally get motivated (right along side Pokémon GO, of course).

Step 1: Install StepLockTo get started, the first thing you'll need to do is install the app, which is called StepLock - Walk & Unblock Apps.Install StepLock for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Lock Apps with Your PedometerWhen you first launch StepLock, you'll be greeted by a set-up guide. Go ahead and flip through this, then you'll be taken to the main menu.Next, tap the floating action button in the bottom-right corner, then use the following menu to select an app you'd like to lock. From here, use the + and - buttons to set the number of steps you'd like to require before the app will be unlocked, then press "Add." You can repeat this process for up to 2 apps in the free version, but you can remove this restriction with an in-app purchase of $1.49.

Step 3: Start Walking to Unlock Your AppsFrom now on, you won't be able to access these apps until you've reached your daily step goal—instead, when you open a locked app, you'll be greeted by a screen that tells you how many more steps you need before the app can be used. The step counter resets every night at midnight, so you've got plenty of time to reach your goals—but only if you're motivated enough! When you're using vacuum power, moving water, or compressing air, it's more than likely being done with some sort of pump. I'll be needing a pump for some of my future projects, so in this tutorial, I'll be showing you how to make your own customizable PVC hand pump that will let you do all three. WarningPower tools, like a table saw, pose risks of serious injury. Adequate training and experience are required before operating. The results and claims of this pump are based solely on my personal experiences with the one demonstrated in the video. Individual results may vary. The pump is a simple design and not made, or claimed, to be used in any heavy duty operations, or relatively high pressures. Use of this content is at your own risk.

MaterialsI thought it might be good to build a simple pump, mainly for learning purposes and future projects, and wanted to do it with low-cost materials. For the pump piston and chamber, I was inspired by a picture I saw in a Google image search by someone who used the 1¼" and 1" sizes of tubes, and he mentioned he cut the grooves for the O-rings on a table saw. That was a new idea to me and gave me the inspiration to put this together. The materials I used are outlined in detail in the picture.

How to Build a PVC Hand PumpYou can see here that the 1" pipe fits closely inside of the 1-1/4" PVC pipe. There is just a little gap, but we actually need this to be air-tight to make a proper piston. The best way that I know of to make an air-tight seal is by using some rubber O-rings. To cut grooves for the rings, I used a table saw, and adjusted the blade by holding the pipe flat on the table top, and lowering the blade until I could see that it would only cut about halfway through the plastic. The goal is to make a nice groove for the O-ring, but not to compromise the structural integrity of the PVC pipe too much.I cut 2 grooves for redundancy. One at 1", and another at 2" marks.I used some wooden braces to keep the pipe steady, and made the cuts by using one hand to hold the pipe on the blade, and the other hand to rotate the pipe slowly. Of course safety and caution are top priorities when working around power tools and open cutting blades. Images via wonderhowto.com The O-rings fit perfectly into place. Image via wonderhowto.com This end of the pipe also needs to be capped off to seal it air tight. Image via wonderhowto.com You can't really tell in the picture, but I've glued on an end plug that is solid. In the diagram I said it was a 1" plug, but in reality it was a ¾" plug that I sanded down to fit inside the end of the 1" pipe.Now this end of the tube is completely sealed. To finish the piston, we need to do a little work on the exterior tube.I got a 1¼" slip cap and used a 1-3/8" forstner bit to drill a hole in the center. An O-ring was added into the inside of the cap around the hole, and put to the side for a minute. To insert the piston, the O-rings need some lubrication, or the friction on the inside walls of the pipe will damage them. I used Vaseline, but some people have suggested Vaseline will eat the O-rings over time, and that some type of silicon grease would be better.To the bottom of the 1¼" pipe I cemented on the coupling, ¾" reducer bushing, short riser, and threaded tee. With the 2 O-rings lubricated, the piston should push air-tight into the larger pipe. The modified slip cap can be cemented on top now, and when the piston is bottomed out, there should just be a couple of inches of pipe poking out the top.I chose to paint the fittings black, and the pipe blue, just for contrast. The handle is made from 2 pieces of 4½" x 1" PVC pipe cut from the scraps off of the piston.Everything is cemented together as shown in the picture, and when the handle is complete, it cements onto those couple of inches of piston pipe sticking out of the hydraulic piston chamber.This completes the piston, and adding 2 check valves to the threaded Tee at the bottom will complete the pump! Note: Make sure your check valves are pointing the right way. :) Since the check valves are threaded, they can be moved around, changed out, or positioned in many creative ways. Using additional PVC pipe and fittings opens up many different options. The imagination is the limitation.

Using Your New Hand PumpWith the vertical pump approach, I could pump around 3 gallons per minute. This pump seemed to move just over 2 cups of water per cycle. You could try making this into a pump to move water vertically, or leverage it with your feet for more of a bilge pump type approach. With the horizontal approach, I could move over 5 gallons per minute because I could put my weight into it and move it faster.The pump was made for pumping water, but it proves extremely effective for compressing air, as well as creating a vacuum. The pump has an intake side, and an outflow side. If you hook up to the intake, you create a vacuum.I blew up a balloon and attached it to the intake side, and on every stroke it got smaller and smaller until it was actually sucked inside the tube. I tried blocking the valves from both directions, and when I pulled back on the piston I was met with a strong vacuum in the chamber, which pulled the piston back inside with considerable force when I let go. Because the piston isn't physically attached to anything, the handle can rotate a full 360 degrees. If you need to clean the piston, or add some more lubrication, you can pull the whole handle out like an oversized plunger. It goes back in the same way it came out.I'm planning to use this piston design in future projects that require pneumatic and hydraulic pistons.In my testing, the valves work great with air and water. I didn't have any gauges to test the strength of the vacuum so can't say how strong the vacuum would be, but it certainly does create one.While there are some special tools used to create this pump (table saw and forester bit), I believe with a little creativity the pump could be made just as effectively without them, making this a simple and duplicatable design.If you haven't seen the video yet, check it out here, and if you liked this project, perhaps you'll like some of my others. Step 2: Install WinterBoard & CirculusAfter jailbreaking, head into Cydia, and install WinterBoard. This jailbreak app will let you apply new themes.Once installed, head back in to Cydia, and search for and install Circulus. How To: Create & Edit Documents Using Microsoft Office for Android & iOS

In a flurry of moves today, Microsoft has not only released their suite of Office apps for the iPad, but they also updated their Android and iOS Office Mobile apps to allow for creating and editing documents without requiring an Office 365 account (so long as it's for "home" use).

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android & iOSA significant update to the Office Mobile app on both platforms hit today, now allowing you to create and edit documents with just a Microsoft account.First, grab the app, then let's take a quick look at what you can do. I'll be using the Android app, but the functionality will be the same for both.For Android Or iOS You may not need a paid Office 365 account to use these apps, but a Microsoft account will be necessary. Sign up for one if you don't have an account already (the sign-up functionality was not working for me within the app itself), then open the app and sign in. The app works great with documents stored on the cloud using OneDrive (Microsoft's free cloud-storage service) as well as local documents on your phone, and email attachments.

Creating & Editing DocumentsPowerPoint presentations can be edited within the app, while Excel spreadsheets and Word documents can be both created and edited. The main screen provides tabs fors recent items, cloud storage, and item creation.

Excel SpreadsheetsJust about all the basic functions and formulas are present, but the app can't be used to create or edit complex sheets (although I could view a spreadsheet that had a pivot table, I couldn't edit it).Let's take a look at my not-so-awesome NCAA bracket as an example of how to edit a basic spreadsheet. The top row of buttons, from left to right, will allow you to navigate between sheets, search, edit, add a formula, and basic Excel functions (the three-dot menu button).

PowerPoint PresentationsHandy for viewing your presentations on the go, the PowerPoint editing functionality is very limited. You can't create new presentations, though some basic editing tools can be used in a pinch to fix typos or delete slides—but not much else. You can view all slides at once using the four-window button, or make simple edits to presentations by tapping the pencil icon. Aside from that, not much to see here folks!

Word DocumentsMobile Word has the most functionality, with plenty of tools to edit all but the more graphically intense documents, or those containing embedded objects. Again from left to right, we have buttons for automated table of contents (for navigation purposes), search, edit, and formatting and save/share options from the three-dot menu. Again, it's basic, but it'll do for quick edits and, if you're so inclined, note taking.It's a good update to the suite with perfect document viewing functionality and a few editing tools that are handy in a pinch. And seeing as it's free for personal use, installing it is a no-brainer.

After all the leaks and peeks of the HTC One M8, it has finally been officially introduced to the public, available for purchase at most U.S. carriers. HTC also unveiled Sense 6 during the launch event, the newest iteration of its operating system, and thanks to their new Advantage Program, the update shouldn't be too far behind for the older One (M7).The waiting game isn't meant for people like us, though, so the Insertcoin Team put together a ROM from a leaked version of Sense 6. Just like the current version of Sense, this ROM comes with Android 4.4.2 and a few extra tweaks and mods. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Getting Sense 6 on Your HTC One M7If you are already rooted, you can flash the ROM in recovery. Follow this guide (starting at Step 2) if you're unsure of how to flash a ROM. Once you've got the ROM loaded up, follow along for a breakdown of all the new features included in Sense 6.

The New Quick Settings CustomizationChanging your Quick Settings tiles has been a staple in custom ROMs for ages, but in its newest iteration, HTC has added it to Sense. To change your tiles, all you need to do slide the notification shade down and hit the clipboard button on the top right.As of right now, there are only twelve options to add or remove, but hopefully HTC adds more later on (I'm looking at you, Auto-lock).

The New UI ChangesHTC has a pretty decent track record when it comes to aesthetically improving Sense with each update, and this is no exception. In Sense 6, they added a flatter color scheme that seems to fit Google's newer Android design guidelines. This style has been added to most of their stock apps, and even included the status bar blending that shipped with KitKat, though it doesn't work with all apps, just the ones that HTC ships with the new update. HTC also decided to change the status bar icons to match the new flat feel, and KitKat in general. Sorry you green battery icon lovers, that icon now seems to be gone for good.

The New Themes AvailableThose familiar with older versions of Sense will remember the Themes option in the Personalize section of their Settings app, which was removed in Sense 5. These options are back in Sense 6 and will add some new flair to your menus and HTC apps. Sense 6 comes with four pre-loaded themes, with hopefully more options on the way. In addition, they also added the new fonts Helvetica and LCD, with the option to download more online.

The Changes to the Camera AppTo keep in line with their new style changes, HTC also updated the look and feel of the Sense Camera app. Panorama, Zoe, and all the other modes you are used to are still included, but the mode selection screen has been changed to better blend with the new Sense design. There are now circular icons for the mode switcher—bring it up by tapping the bottom left icon—as well as a less intrusive white-themed settings panel. A new Zoe app is also included, but it seems that we are going to have to wait until its official launch this summer to use it, as we're not able to download it right now.

The Updated BlinkFeed LookThe most notable changes to BlinkFeed, HTC's solution to never missing your favorite content, is its new theme. Depending on what theme you have selected in your settings determines the color scheme of BlinkFeed. HTC still kept the "browse by categories" option they introduced in Sense 5.5, so just swipe to the right to reveal that panel.There is also a new scrolling feature, as HTC opted to change the paged feel of BlinkFeed to a continuous scroll, so it will now be easier than ever to get lost in your feed.

Other Notable Changes in Sense 6Along with the above features, HTC has also included a 'Close All' button to their app switcher, so now you don't have keep swiping up on each and every app. Rather, now all you have to do now is tap the 'X' on the top right of the Recent Apps Menu. There are also hints of a KnockOn feature, but it does not seem to work currently. This is probably due to the fact that this is not an official release, so we will probably have to wait until then to get all the new gestures added to Sense 6. The new Extreme Power Saver Mode isn't included in current Sense 6 ROMs, but again that could all change when it is officially released this summer.
Final Thoughts on Sense 6If this unofficial release is anything like the one we can expect from the official rollout, then I am ready to embrace it with open arms. Step 2: Adjust Theme OptionsOpen the app and tap the button in the middle of the screen to make sure the service is enabled. At this point, you should see the Assistive Touch floating button on the right edge of your screen. If you'd like, you can tap "Background" on this same menu to change the background color of the pop-up interface. Next, head back out to the main menu and select "Icon." From here, you can choose a new look for the floating bubble that will reside on every screen and give you access to Assistive Touch features.

Step 3: Add or Remove Items from the Assistive Touch MenuAside from just theming, you can change the shortcuts provided by Assistive Touch if you head to the app's settings menu, then select the "Panel" option. From here, if you'd like to replace an item with a different one, simply tap it, then select an action from the list. Assistive Touch is capable of launching tons of useful shortcuts, so make sure to look through the full list to see everything it can do.

Step 4: Navigate Your Phone with a Virtual Home ButtonOnce you've got everything set up, using Assistive Touch is incredibly easy. For starters, you'll see the floating button on top of every screen, so when you need to access a function, just tap it and a window will pop up. From here, you can do things like navigate your phone's interface with back, home, and recent apps buttons, and you can also access your bookmarked sites, favorite apps, system settings, or capture a screenshot, among other things. Then, if you tap the search field at the top of this interface, you can type in an app's name to quickly launch it from any screen. Overall, it's almost identical to Apple's AssistiveTouch interface, but the Android version actually has a few more features that you can't get on an iPhone.
