How To: This DIY Deathly Hallows LED Clock Is Perfect for Any Harry Potter Loving Muggle

In the Harry Potter world, there was a character by the name of Beedle the Bard, who told a story about witnessing the three Peverell brothers building a bridge out of magic and successfully crossing a very dangerous river that had claimed many lives.Death was upset that they had survived, but being the sly and cunning figure that he was, offered to give each brother an artifact of great power knowing it would eventually lead to their deaths.The Peverell brothers chose the Elder Wand, Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility, which later became known as the Deathly Hallows. The symbol for it can be seen below, in the hands of Xenophilius Lovegood. The symbol, and the three artifacts it represents, played a prominent role throughout the movie, helping Harry ultimately defeat Lord Voldemort. In fact, the symbol has been so popular that it spurred Muggles around the world to permanently tattoo the Deathly Hallows on themselves. If that's the case, Reddit user yeenasty has created a Deathly Hallows LED clock that you can build yourself! Image via imgur.com The clock, made from craft wood and LEDs, is powered and controlled by an Arduino Uno Rev3 and can be plugged into a USB wall outlet. The LED ring partitions represent the hours, while the wooden hand stands for minutes.At midnight, all of the LEDs are turned off, with each one turning on by the hour. At noon, all of LEDs are turned on, with each one shutting off for each hour passed. Images via imgur.com The first step he took was designing the triangle shape, representing the Cloak of Invisibility. He cut the each end of the three pieces of wood into 30 degree anglesâ€”something he said was very tedious. He then stained the inside of the triangle and glued the three pieces together. Images via imgur.com He then designed the circle part of the clock, representing the Resurrection Stone. He used really thin wood and wet it to bend into the perfect circle, which he then glued with epoxy at a 10 inch diameter. He also stained the outside of the circle. Images via imgur.com In the next step, he tested the circuit to try out the code for clock, using an Arduino. He then used 12 LEDs for the hours, two smaller red LEDs for the minute hand, and a 180 degree servo. He added buttons on the side of the clock to control the hours and minutes. Images via imgur.com The hour partitions were then inserted into the circle and painted blue. He added a cardboard to the back of the circle to hold the Arduino. He then added foil to reflect the LED light and inserted the LEDs pointed downward, all covered with a dark folder to dim the LEDs. He used electrical tape layer of epoxy to reinforce everything. Images via imgur.com The final step was designing the front plate of the clock, lining the straight piece of wood across the front of the clock (representing the Elder's Wand), adding the minute hand, and staining the rest of the clock. Project OverviewHave any old school floppy drives lying around? Get hacking... and transform them into an electronic orchestra! This project uses a myRIO embedded controller and four floppy disk drives. The myRIO effectively plays the disk drives like musical instruments, by stepping the disk drive's integrated motors at specific frequencies.By referencing this table, I developed a LabVIEW VI (which runs on the myRIOs real-time processor) that converts a musical note (such as a C4) in to a wave frequency. For example, the note C4 would be a frequency of 261.63 Hz. This frequency value is then passed to the myRIOs on-board FPGA, which generates a digital pulse train used to control the floppy drive motors. To generate the pulse train, I used LabVIEW to create a simple FPGA personality that inverts the digital true/false within a loop, but I dynamically set the loop timing to be half the period of the requested frequency value.Note: the period has to be halved, because one loop cycle would be true and the next cycle would be false. Therefore, two loop cycles is equal to one wave period. See the formula below. The next task is to change the motor direction when the floppy drive's read head reaches the end or the start of the disk. To ensure that the myRIO never tries to drive the read head beyond the start/end of the disk, I implemented a custom counter on the FPGA, to constantly monitor the position of the read head and invert its direction as appropriate.A bit of ancient history... floppy disks are made from a thin piece of plastic coated with a ferromagnetic material, which is magnetized to retain data. More specifically, the disk is divided into 80 data tracks arranged in concentric circles, like the rings on a tree. Therefore the floppy drive's integrated motors are designed to step the read head through each of these 80 tracks. Using this information, I created a custom counters on the myRIO FPGA to ensure that the direction of the motor changed when it reached the start or end of the disk. So, for values 0-79 the read head will go forward (writing a digital true on the direction line of the floppy drive), then for 80-159 the read head will go back (a digital false to the direction line). Finally, after the myRIO has finished playing a song, the read head must be return back to the starting position, by driving the motor back the remaining steps. This can be done quite simply using the custom counter that is already created.This setup is then duplicated for how many drives you have to wire to the myRIO. The ability to create/duplicate many parallel tasks is one of the major benefits of an FPGA.Now that the drives can me sent a tonal frequency and produce a musical note, the next part of the project was to teach the myRIO some musical scores! To do this, I chose to use MIDI files. To quote Wikipedia: "A MIDI file is not a recording of actual music. Rather, it is a spreadsheet-like set of instructions".A MIDI file has up to 15 tracks of messages, each representing a separate instrument within the song (e.g. piano, synth, guitar, bass, etc.). Each MIDI message includes channel number, the note to be played, note start time and note duration. These messages can then be turned into arrays of notes for each channel on the myRIOs realtime processor, which can then be passed down to the FPGA.The wiring requirements of myFloppyDriveQuartet are quite simple, because each drive needs just two digital linesâ€”one for step and one for direction. You also need to short the drive select pins and connected the ground pins back to DIO ground of the myRIO. Each drive will also need 6 volts for power.Now that the embedded software (both real time and FPGA) is developed and the hardware wired, there is one final piece of the puzzle... the GUI (graphical user interface). To control myFloppyDriveQuartet (select the music track, start/stop the floppy drives, transpose music notes etc.), I created two user interface options.PC/Laptop Interface: a simple LabVIEW VI which communicates data from a front panel to a library of network-published shared variables hosted on the myRIOTablet Interface: I created a portable GUI for use with Apple iPad and Android tablets, using the free NI Data Dashboard app. This was a very simple process that required no programming what so ever. As the Data Dashboard GUI connects to the same network-published shared variables, you can use the PC or Tablet GUI without modifying the code running on the myRIO.
Steps to Implement or Execute CodeDownload the source code from the NI Community page and wire up the drives (as described above). Connect your myRIO to the computer and power. Run the RT VI. Run the Hose VI. Choose a song and click play. Once that is working, you can then turn that in start-up VI and use the DataDashboard app to select music with out a computer connected.

Your smartphone has a ton of ringtone options built in, but ringtones haven't really changed much in the past decade, and it's definitely not cool to hear someone in the supermarket with the same lame ringer. While replacing the stock sounds with a song of your choosing is the best way to keep your phone personalized, why not go a step further using a video?This can easily be done on your Samsung Galaxy S3 using an app on Google Play called dodol pop (beta) ringtones. This app adds the ability to use videos as not only ringtones, but also notifications and alarms, as long as you're running Android 2.3.3 and higher. You can also upload personal videos from your Gallery or even edit sound files. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Dodol pop has a nice looking, easy to use user interface. From the main screen you can select between, Ringtone, Notification, Package, Edit, or Alarm. I'll be covering each section in detail below, so keep on going...

RingtoneSetting up a video ringtone is super easy. Tap the Ringtone icon on the dodol pop home page and you'll be taken to the selection screen. Here you can select from a ton of user generated videos, music, or sound clips. These categories are available at the top, right below the orange menu bar.Since the coolest thing about the app is the videos, that's what I will focus on. To set a video ringtone, you'll have to download your selected video to your Galaxy S3. Once downloaded, you can then set it as your ringtone. Next to Current Ringtone, you should see your most recent selection. Now when you receive a phone call, your video will play. If you were looking to set a separate video for each of your contacts, you're out of luck. The app is still in beta, so this feature could be added at a later date.

NotificationWhile you can set videos for your alarm and ringtone, you cannot for your notification tone. This is probably a good thing, since it would be pretty tiresome to have a video clip run every time you receive a text message. You can still select from user-generated sound clips and music files. Again, download the file and then set it as your current notification.

PackageYou can download free packages which may include videos, music, and sounds clips. Just go to the package tab, find a package you want to download, and hit buy (all current packages are free). You will be taken to the Google Play Store where you can then download the package items. When you download a package, it goes into the Ringtone and Notification sections and also creates a shortcut.

EditYou can also edit sounds files or your own recording, as well. Well, edit may be a little generous. You can trim and move the start and end locations.

AlarmTo set an alarm, go to the home page and look near the bottom. There is an alarm section where you can add multiple alarms by hitting the plus icon and then setting your time. Once your time is set, you choose between a video, music, or sound clip under the media section. You can make the alarm repeat, alter the volume, and label it as well.
DrawbacksThe Korean developer has created a great app in terms of the idea, but American users may find the video selection to be lacking in songs that they recognize, since most of the user-generated videos are in fact Korean selections. It would be great to see integration with YouTube down the line. Also, dodol pop lacks the option for custom ringtones for individual contacts, which would be a killer benefit if added.In the end, dodol pop is a solid app for those of you seeking an alternative to the regular alarm clock or ringtone. It's free in the Play Store, so make sure to check it out for yourself.

If You Don't See the OTA 4.4.2 Update YetIf you don't see the notification yet, you can manually fetch the over-the-air (OTA) update. Head to your GS4's Settings -> More -> About device -> Software update -> Check for updates, then press OK at the bottom. You'll need to be on a Wi-Fi connection (you can't update over mobile data), and as the update can use 412 MB to 842 MB of storage (depending on your current Android version), have at least 850 MB of free space on your device. It also wouldn't hurt to have a fully charged battery, or just keep your phone plugged in, so it doesn't run out of juice in the middle of the update.

How to Bypass the 24-Hour Waiting PeriodIt may tell you that your software is already up to date, and to check back in 24 hours. While you're limited to checking for updates once every 24 hours, you can use a little softModder trick to get around that. Head to your GS4's Settings -> More -> Date and time. Uncheck the box for Automatic date and time, and you'll be able to set the date manually. Simply forward the clock a day and you'll be able to run the software check again. Just don't forget to set it back to automatic time once you're done getting the update.
Have a Rooted GS4? Some Things You Should KnowIf you're rooted (most likely on 4.3 or 4.2.2), you might not want to update to KitKat quite yet. For one, OTAs and modded phones don't play well with each other. If you do download the OTA, it'll probably fail during installation. Secondly, on the off chance that you do get the update to work on your GS4, you'll lose root.My advice? Hold off on updating until this build of KitKat has been rooted. It's only a matter of time until developers find a way to root, and we should be able to get some flashable Odin files to manually upgrade to KitKat.But stay tunedâ€”when the rooted version of the update is released, we'll have your download link and instructions here.
