How To: Disable iOS 12's Annoying Password Creation Feature on Your iPhone

Maybe you prefer writing passwords in a notebook. Maybe you like creating your passwords yourself. Whatever the case, you don't like iOS 12's new automatic password generator, and you don't need it to pop up every time you enter a new password in Safari or a third-party app. Lucky for you, iOS 12 lets you disable the feature altogether. Unfortunately, that perk comes with a catch.You see, to disable the new password creation tool in iOS 12, you'll also need to disable Apple's AutoFill feature for passwords. This option is what enables you to automatically fill in username and passwords from your iCloud Keychain or third-party password manager into fields when signing into accounts in both Safari and other apps. Additionally, it allows iOS to auto-fill SMS codes sent via 2FA. To avoid the password generator, you'll also have to do without AutoFill and all its features.Don't Miss: iOS 12 Makes 2FA for Third-Party Apps & Websites Easy with Security Code AutoFill from SMS Texts Password generator enabled (left) vs. disable (right). If you do use a third-party password manager, the process is slightly different. Open Settings, tap "Passwords & Accounts," then tap "AutoFill Password." This opens a new page, where you'll find the option to disable "AutoFill Passwords" for iCloud Keychain, which removes Apple's ability to suggest passwords. Next, tap the "Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings" option up top, then tap "Erase All Content and Settings" on the warning prompt that states all media and data will be deleted. If you have an Apple Watch Series 1 or 2, or an Apple Watch Series 3 without cellular capabilities, that's all there is to it.However, if you have an Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) model with an active cellular plan, you'll be asked if you want to "Keep Plan" or "Remove Plan" from the Apple Watch. If you keep the plan, you won't have to worry when it comes to setting up your Apple Watch again, but if you remove it, you may need to contact your carrier to have it added back onto the Apple Watch. Your iPhone will start unpairing your Apple Watch, which doesn't take very long. After it's unpaired, you'll see the "Start Pairing" screen on your iPhone, and the Apple Watch will begin wiping itself and restoring itself back to factory settings. The restoring process may take a little while, so be patient. Transition animations are an essential element of any mobile operating system. They give the user a sense of what's happening on the screen, where the apps are coming from, and where they're going.The stock transition animations on the Nexus 5 are some of the most boring ones out there. A simple fade or slide transition here and there, and that's pretty much it.Developer Rui Santos was also underwhelmed by the stock transition animations on the Nexus 5. So much so, that he went ahead and ported some of the more dramatic animations from various custom builds of Android, and made them into flashable ZIP files for everyone to enjoy.So if you're rooted with TWRP installed, you can easily liven up the transitions on your stock Nexus 5. Step 1: Choose a Set of Transition AnimationsSantos has ported three different sets of transition animations to the Nexus 5. The second and third options are only slightly different, but I've made a few demo videos for you to use in determining the right fit for your style.

Step 2: Install the Transition Animation ZIPTo install the ZIP file that you just downloaded, simply boot into TWRP. If you're not familiar with the process behind that, refer to my complete TWRP guide for more info.From TWRP's main screen, start by tapping the Install button. From here, navigate to the Download folder on your device to locate the ZIP you just downloaded. Tap the TWRP_Framework...zip file, then swipe the slider at the bottom of the next screen to install the mod. When the process is finished, tap Reboot System.

Step 3: Adjust Transition Scale Values (Optional)When you've finished booting back up, the new transition animations will already be in place. These animations are much more grandiose than the stock animations, so they take a bit more time to complete.If you'd like to speed up the new transition animations, there's a setting for that under Developer options.If you don't have Developer options in your phone's Settings menu already, it's really simple to activateâ€”just head to Settings, then About Phone. Scroll down to the bottom of this list and tap Build Number seven times. You'll know that you activated the hidden menu when you see a toast message that says You are now a developer. Now, back out one level and head into the newly-activated Developer options menu. From here, scroll down a bit and tap the entry for Window Animation Scale. Use the following menu to select a value that is smaller than the default of 1x. I've found that .75x is a pretty good value. Next, give the same treatment to the Transition Animation Scale entry. After that, your custom transition animations should look nice and smooth.
Step 4: Revert Back to Stock Animations (Optional)If you decide that you'd rather switch back to the stock transition animations after applying one of these mods, there's a fairly simply way.The ZIP that applied the animations in the first place actually backed up the file with your original system animations attached to it. Unfortunately, you can't restore this file from within Android, as it is an essential component that is required for Android to continue running.You can, however, restore this file using TWRP recovery. So go ahead and boot into that if you're ready to switch back to your stock animations.

Mount the System PartitionFirst up, you'll need to mount the System partition. From TWRP's home screen, tap the Mount button. Next, tick the box next to the System entry, then tap the Home icon at the bottom-left.

Restore the Framework-res.apk File to Its Original LocationWith the system partition mounted, you can now copy the file back to its original location. Start by tapping the Advanced button, then choose File Manager from the following menu. Use this file browser to navigate to the SD Card entry, then head into the vrtheme-backup folder. From here, head into the system folder, then the framework folder within that. Here you'll find your original framework-res.apk file. Tap it, then select Copy from the following menu. Next, you'll be asked where you want to put this file. Use the file browser to navigate to the system folder, then the framework folder inside of that. Paste the file into this folder by pressing the Select button near the bottom-right. After that, swipe the slider to confirm your choice.

Fix PermissionsWhen the file has been successfully copied, tap the Back arrow twice to head back to TWRP's Advanced menu. From here, select Fix Permissions. Swipe the slider at the bottom of the next screen to confirm your choice, and when that's finished, tap Reboot System. After you get back up, your original animations will be restored. The transition animations that Santos has created for us are pretty slick, if I say so myself. What are your opinions? Let us know in the comments section below.

Messages 101: How to Enable & Disable Read Receipts for iMessages

If you've accidentally turned on "Read Receipts" for all of your iMessages, there's an easy way to disable it so that no one knows when you're actually reading their incoming messages. You could also pick and choose which conversations can see that you've read their messages if you don't want to kill the feature entirely.Read Receipts has been a feature for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch ever since iOS 5 when the iMessage platform was first introduced. It has always been an opt-in setting, so you never really had to worry about people being notified that you've read their iMessages. However, it's very easy to enable this setting and forget it.If you have not already opted into Read Receipts, Apple will give you prompts occasionally to turn it on. It's very easy to tap "Allow" on this if you're in a hurry, without thinking twice about what it means. With it on, every time you read somebody's iMessage in the Messages app, they will receive a "Read" notification underneath what they sent you on their end. Also, while they won't get a "Read" stamp when you read their iMessage on a lock screen preview or in your Notifications View (Recent Notifications in iOS 11), if you use 3D Touch to expand the messages, they will know that you've read it. Opening an iMessage using 3D Touch on your lock screen (left, middle) will show as "Read" in their Messages app (right). Truthfully, when you think about it more in depth, Read Receipts aren't all that bad. Carrie Dennis of Thrillist is actually a strong supporter of Read Receipts because she believes they keep you honest and accountable. They also can cut down on all that time you spend overthinking your responses and reassure the recipient that you're not totally ignoring them. How to Opt In/Out of Read Receipts for All iMessagesEnabling or disabling this option is easy. Just go to "Messages" in your Settings app, then toggle on or off "Send Read Receipts." If you don't see this option, it's probably because you don't even have "iMessage" turned on at the top of this page and are strictly messaging with SMS instead, which is not supported. In that case, you have nothing to worry about (except the fact that you're not using iMessage!).

How to Enable/Disable Read Receipts IndividuallyTurning Read Receipts on or off completely has worked the same ever since iOS 5, but iOS 10 brought a new option that lets you turn Read Receipts on or off on a case-by-case basis. This way, you can turn it off across the board but go back and select people that you actually want to see that you've read their messages. Or, you can turn it on for everyone and disable it for individual contacts.To do this, in the Messages app, select a conversation thread, then tap on the "i" (info) button in the top right.
